Happy J4

I was watching “My Fair Lady” last night. It has been ages since I have seen it. I was taken with the part where Eliza leaves and Henry Higgins finds her at his mother’s house. Eliza says that she felt that she has always been treated like a lady by Mr. Pickering and that subsequently she felt like Henry had not treated her like a lady. But Higgins countered that he felt it was more important to treat all people the same. I think there is some truth in that. Of course I believe we should treat all people well and with respect (Henry Higgins admitted he was grouchy with everyone).

Over the years I have been in many positions to learn about the stories of people from other countries and places. For the past 12 years I have been a writer for Hmong Times. The Hmong people are an ethnic group from Southeast Asia that had there traditional way of life uprooted by the Vietnam war. Their story is not so different from my in-laws.

Many Hmong people have settled in St. Paul and are setting up new traditions. For the past 34 years the J4 Freedom Celebration and Soccer tournament has been the event of the summer but for many years I didn’t go, mostly because crowds are not really my thing. But this year I went and was really impressed.  Here are some pictures of the event.

Bee brought three generations of his family to enjoy the event that brings literally 10s of the thousands of people from all over the country. So this summer I encourage you to get out, meet new people, hear their stories and have fun all at the same time.

Happy Memorial Day–Enjoy summer

When we first moved to the country I never wanted to leave the property and that was fine for awhile. But even farmer’s need to take a break and step back and reset. I find for me the best way to do that is the wilderness. I am blessed to have a family property I can retreat to, but even with having a place available I hadn’t been there since we moved. Finally this weekend I was able to get away and it was like heaven. I have to say being out there away from life’s pressures, enjoying nature, I just feel more myself and more able to enjoy life and family.

My children took the weekend’s opportunity to enjoy trying out the camera. Two and Mavis especially enjoyed this with Two saying he wanted to be a photographer. Here is a portrait he took of Effie.

I love just going for walks with the children.

One thing I really want to learn is how to identify the things of nature–plants, trees, birds, bird calls, etc. Here is a plant I discovered on this camping trip. I believe it is a marsh marigold.

It wasn’t all fun and games. The gentlemen worked to put up an outhouse.

So work, play, relax, love, enjoy and reset that was the name of the game this weekend. Honestly it was so needed. I hope you are taking time regularly to recharge and reset. What things do you like to do?

Spring Finally Here?! Time for the Open House

After a crazy weird winter (read long, cold, a lot of snow) I just realized yesterday, literally, that spring may actually be here. I realized that I have been delaying letting myself think about spring because I didn’t want to make the mental adjustment and then wake up to a foot of snow. I have woken up to a foot of snow a couple times this “spring.” Winter for us started October 20th when we were coming home from our lone camping trip of the year. We had our canoe on top and were driving through snow. That’s Minnesota!

But last night the first thunderstorms rolled through. And again today. And all of a sudden I was hit by the realization that yes spring is here. It is quite a relief actually.

DSC_0247[1]

Our ancient white oak gets a little shower. And we all breathe an audible sign of relief. It is not likely that snow will cover us again until the fall.

One thing I really want to do more of this year is relaxing with the children and just enjoying them. Our oldest turns 10 this year, double digits! Time flies and so I continue to look for opportunities to just be with them, “doing life.” One of my favorite things to do is bake. Often the afternoons find me and at least a couple of the children in the kitchen making snack.

My favorite recipe site is Yummy Mummy. I even bought her cookbook. Today to honor spring we are cooking up a new recipe–Lavender cupcakes. It is from the cookbook. While most of her recipes are pretty healthy I used white flour with the germ and succanat in place of the granulated sugar and it worked out really well. One note all the dairy products are supposed to be at room temperature so plan ahead. It was a good lesson for the children.

We are also planning for our Spring Open House on Sunday, May 18th from 1-4:00. Hope you can stop by and say hello.

What are you doing to celebrate spring?

Cats to the Rescue

I am a cat person. I have lived with cats nearly my whole life until I married and spent the first 3 or 4 years of my married life trying to be a dog person. I do love our dogs, but I am not a dog person. You know those online quizzes that ask what kind of animal you would be, well I would be a cat, hands down, no questions. If cat is not an option then I have to think about it a bit more.

I am also an introvert and cats are the ultimate introvert. When Proeun and I were first dating he said that one of the things he loved about me is that I didn’t “need” him, I “wanted” him. Anyone who has had a cat know they don’t need us. But when they want us it feels pretty good.

In this post I write about how cats joined our family again. That was about 6 years ago. Then when we moved to our farm 5 cats came with the property, these were outdoor cats, and unfortunately a year later there was only one left. 2 died, one hit by a car and one just died, one got chased away and one just left and never came back.

In the fall we were starting to see more rodents around, getting ready for winter and we only had one outdoor cat. I was beginning to see how useful they were in addition to fun. So 2 kittens joined our farm from a neighboring farm.

This spring though we have 4 very different additions. We were contacted by a feral cat rescue in St. Paul, they were looking to rehome some cats that were not particularly social and thought a farm might be a good fit. I thought so also so for 4 weeks ago tomorrow 4 cats joined our family. They are not sure what to think about us yet and rehoming adult cats can be tricky. But these four have been doing quite well.

These 2, a male and a female came from a home with a lot of cats. The owner died and they needed a new home, Julie and Leo.

This little guy was living in a culvert outside a McDonald’s on the Eastside of St. Paul. Somewhere along the way he lost a paw. But he is adjusting just fine to life on the farm. Lord Byron is his name.

This guy lived in a shelter and needed a new home, desperately. Now he is part of the farm family. Salmon is his name.

The children were a little disappointed they don’t like to cuddle but we have our indoor cats for that. I am just happy that they seem to be settling in and enjoying a little freedom. For the first couple of weeks they lived in carriers from the rescue. Now they are roaming the workroom getting more used to us and the freedom. Next week they will be released into our pole building.

I have to admit it has been very rewarding bringing them here. This is one of the things that I wanted to do when we had more space, provide a home for animals in need of one. So welcome to our farm.

You know how it is as a mom. With each baby you add 5-10 pounds maybe more. You are so busy loving on the new beauty in your life that you don’t even notice or care that you haven’t gotten back down to your pre-pregnancy weight. It is just life and the pounds are adding up.

I didn’t care until my fourth pregnancy. When I went into labor early at 33 weeks and then on bedrest for 5 weeks that was when things really started going downhill for me. Confined to bed and trying to eat as much as possible to bulk that baby up should she still come early, things started going down hill fast. She didn’t come early, not until 42 weeks to be exact. She was a big baby and I lost a lot of blood and had to have a blood transfusion, but even with that I was very very weak after her birth. I had the extra weight from trying to bulk up and the weakness from bedrest an now even more weak after childbirth. I never lost any weight from that pregnancy and before I knew it was pregnant with my 5th.

After he was born I decided I was tired of feeling weak and tired all the time. Getting in shape was more about being healthy then loosing weight for me.

Here I am at Gooseberry Falls with my fourth baby on my back. I was looking for a picture of how big I had gotten but apparently censored many of them.

That was when I stumbled across Beth Learn at Fit 2 B Us–an online “gym” offering “tummy safe” exercise videos. As you can imagine after 5 pregnancies my tummy was feeling pretty weak, stretched out and flabby. I discovered that there are relatively simple and painless exercises to get those muscles back in shape. Actually I found out exercise could be painless. I was hooked.

Still a year later after loosing 35+ pounds and now feeling strong and capable I am using her videos a minimum of 3 times weekly (though I try for everyday but life happens you know). What I really love about her videos are they are painless and fun, I don’t have to get myself siked up for exercise, I look forward to it and how it makes me feel. During one yoga video, “Warrior I” my daughter Mavis said, “oh mommy you look so beautiful.” I don’t think I have to tell you how that made me feel.

She also has videos that focus on “little” muscles life the pelvic floor (mommas you need to work this out) and the neck. Overall I have just found her approach so different and refreshing. It is all about quality of life and health.

Me this morning

Beth Learn is also available for consultations, they have an active facebook page and is just and overall great resource and community.

It is also very affordable $10 a month with a discount if you purchase a year at a time. But another great thing about Fit 2 B is that you know you are supporting a great online family business (there are 2 families that work together to produce each video and run the web page) and if you sign up and use the code amydoeun you get a further discount and we get credit for referring you. Isn’t that great? You get healthy and support 3 families working for the same goals.

Confession

I have a confession to make–I am a goal/task oriented person. In the past when I was feeling overwhelmed with my perceived workload I would try to slow down by telling myself “just do the next thing.” My theory was instead of looking at a big long list of things to do it was only the next task I had to focus on. But there is fallacy in this, I was still looking at the task, the next goal.

Things were starting to get to a head as they sometimes do last week. I had a baby goat in my living room that wasn’t doing well (luckily she is thriving now), children going crazy from nearly 4 months indoors, a home to keep, the pending growing season, it all seemed like a lot, and “just do the next thing” wasn’t cutting it. I was feeling overwhelmed and crazy. Then one afternoon things changed.

The children were starting to act tired and in need of a rest. The baby was sleeping more and more, though still eating and with a mild fever he wanted to go back to bed after only 2 hours awake. I lay down with him and felt his fever rising fast. He was asleep, I didn’t want to wake him but knew I needed to get his temperature down. Then he had a seizure. We have experience febrile seizures. Though it was scary it wasn’t a panic situation. I had neighbors come a stay with the children until my parents could arrive and called an ambulance.

I was just a fever related seizure. We were home 4 hours later after numerous tests and we went into hibernation. For one week we didn’t leave the house as the sickness worked its way through. I had a mild case, moms don’t have time to get sick. I had children and animals to tend.

I have a new perspective now–saying yes. For the past couple of days I have tried to look at my days as not a list of tasks to finish, or something to get through, but an opportunity to connect. My oldest is 9, half way to 18 and things are flying too fast, “do the next thing,” doesn’t cut it when you have lots of loving and cuddling to do (I have been known to write those on my to-do list).

Yesterday I tried to focus on saying yes to my children. We played board games in the middle of the day, went out to play, changed dinner plans, worked on projects and still finished school and all the tasks on my list. But rather then having the tasks be the goal, loving and connecting was the goal. I have no illusions that I will always remember to do this. That I will never have an incredibly busy day and feel overwhelmed again, but I am hopeful that my perspective is shifting. In just one day I see through my children’s eyes, happy memories of a mother happy and relaxed with them, rather then always focusing on the next thing to do.

Happy Thanksgiving!

It has been ages since I posted but one of the things that we are learning about farm life is the work literally never ends. So if we do not consciously take time for family and relaxation it doesn’t happen. Even though we have been farming for 5 years we are still working on our schedule and living seasonally. So November and December are our much needed breaks from farm life. Of course there are chores that still need to be done and quite a bit of dreaming happens, we also prioritize family time. Here are some pictures I snapped last weekend to give you a taste of what we have been up to.

Compost bins Proeun designed and built after going to the State Fair.
A donkey named Jack joined our farm family–yes the same name as the dog. We didn’t feel it would be fair to rename one so we have 2 Jacks now, both characters.
The barn is stocked with hay for the winter and is currently one of the children’s favorite places to play.
Avril has been practicing reading and now loves to read to her little sisters. I am such a book worm so this does my momma’s heart good.
Although the weather has turned there are still some warm days perfect for playing outside. The children are still enjoying the playhouse we built this spring.
So as you can see that we have a whole lot to be thankful for. We started going around the table at breakfast asking what the children were thankful for. All of them said for their family and the love they have except for Effie who is thankful for her “mommy T-rex.” I am thankful for children that “get” what we are trying to do. And for the privilege of sharing my life with my soul mate and for the journey and the people and animals that make our life great and so much more. And yes if you are reading this blog I am thankful for you.

The season ends

Last week we made our last delivery for the season. It is always a weird feeling when we get to this point. For four months our schedule has been pretty “regular” you could say with cycles of harvesting, washing, packing and delivering. Before that there was the planting, set up projects and scrambling to get everything ready. But now there is just peace. One farmer friend I know said “the good thing about farming in California is that you can farm all year. The bad thing about farming in California is that you can farm all year.”

So now we are moving into new territory for us. For the past several years our falls have been pretty busy. Our last 3 children were born in the fall. Then there was the big move a few years ago. But now we are relatively settled. No babies are expected and the farming is done for the season. Our season will not be one of idleness but rather relaxation.

To kick off this new season we went to Ely, Minnesota, on the borders of the Boundary Waters for a little family getaway to recharge and remind ourselves we are moving to a new season.

Canoeing was a hit. At first the older ones weren’t sure if they would like it but they were pros by the end of the trip.

Bear Head Lake in the morning.

Fishing was a big part of the weekend though we didn’t catch much.

Two kissing the one catch of the weekend.

I have never been in the presence of beavers. I did see an otter but no live beavers, plenty of evidence though. We thought it would be funny to get a picture of our little beaver next to a beaver tree. Note I haven’t had time to knit him his own woolens, so he is borrowing his sisters for the trip. He probably will be made one day. All in all though it was a pretty great trip. On the way home we ran into snow and arrived home to 2 inches on our deck! Talk about a change of seasons.

Vacations, Weddings and New Beginnings

Parents, you know how hard it is to leave your baby. Even if you know your baby is in capable hands making that break is so hard. It is especially hard for parents who have waited a long time for children or struggled to conceive. Well I am realizing this farm is our baby. It was a struggle to get here and to keep it going and we love love love it. But sometimes breaks are nice. That said Proeun still had to encourage me and remind me, “it will be fine, it won’t fall apart, and you will love it even more when you get back.” I have such a wise husband.

Back in the beginning of the year when my sister and my new brother-in-law announced their engagement and started talking about venues I had another realization–family traditions are real and multigenerational. I always loved the family trips to the North Shore of Lake Superior growing up. We went other places to, but I have many many really fond memories of Duluth and points north. I just didn’t realize how much my sister loved it to. So when she said she was planning a fall wedding at a resort on the North Shore I couldn’t wait.

So this last weekend we headed north to celebrate with my sister and a host of combined family and just have some good old fun.

Proeun and the older children prepare for a bike trip to Gooseberry Falls using the resort’s bikes.

Later we all went to the falls for some preliminary pictures. We clean up pretty good. I was hoping to get some really amazing pictures at the falls but it was raining so we took the children back to wait for the ceremony.

Even though we had to work around the rain we had a beautiful and intensely personal ceremony on the shores of the lake. When the new bride and groom kissed for the first time as husband and wife the sun broke through and shone on them. The girls were the flower girls, Proeun and Two ushers and I did a reading. What a blessing to be able to be part of the day for my baby sister!

The next day was beautiful and perfect for exploring.

And playing.

We stopped in Duluth and saw a ship leaving harbor. That never gets old. I love when they blow their horns to the lift bridge and it answers back! We took a bike ride that all of us fit in but unfortunately the pictures all turned out blurry. The memory I will have of that is Pray and Effie sitting in the front basket and as we started up turning and looking at each other and getting big old grins on their faces. Love how they love each other and communicate.

Once we actually got away we found vacation can be kind of addicting. All of us would have loved a couple more days, but duty calls. And today when I delivered boxes to the city and got to drive back home to our farm, where we live, I realized how amazing our everyday life actually is.
